We are a family of six who got off from the Oasis of the Seas cruise on 28th August 2010, 9:30 a.m. We had a bad experience with a taxi driver from Friendly Checker Taxi with plate number PX21B. This driver approached us while we were waiting for a taxi at the Port Everglades terminal. When he knew that we were going to Best Western Dania Beach at 1900 Sterling, he offered to drive us for $50. We knew the distance was only 5.7 miles (11 mins) and we found the price to be too much. We decided to wait for another one. Somehow the dispatcher directed us to the same taxi as there were a lot of people lining up. The driver wanted to charge us 40 dollars for the ride and appeared to be very angry and frustrated. The sheriff tried to resolve the situation and told us to take his cab by the meter, which the driver finally agreed. If the meter went beyond $25 we would only give him a maximum $25. We loaded our luggage and got on the cab. By the time we reached to Stirling street exit, the meter only showed $15. He mumbled something about the price. When we insisted to go by the meter, he suddenly TURNED OFF the meter. We ended up giving him $25 after we removed all luggage from the cab, just to avoid further trouble with this guy. This is our first time to visit Ft. Lauderdale, we did not expect this kind of thing happen in a busy cruise port in USA, I am sure Ft. Lauderdale receives thousand and thousand of cruise guests from all over the world each day, it would be more appropriate to set up effective guidelines for the existing taxi system. When we took a taxi from the airport to the port terminal a week ago we were asked by a dispatcher openly for tips. As a traveler from Toronto, the time we were riding the taxi was quite scary as we didnít know where he would take us or what other tricks heís going to play on us. This is definitely not a nice experience we are going to share with friends back home.
