One of Irelands largest towns, it is the centre of commercial activity in the region. The town was founded in the 13th century by Franciscan monks who settled on an island on the river Fergus. The ruins of their friary stand to this day and give their name to Abbey Street. Ennis and Clare have played a pivotal role in Irish history. The town was the scene of the historic parliamentary election victories of Daniel OConnell in 1828 and Eamonn De Valera in 1917. Both men are commemorated by monuments in the town. |
