Got charged 55 euros from Meridien Hotel to airport a 7 am on a Saturday (that's 55 euros for 14km)! I guess I was still asleep at the moment if not, would have placed my foot up his *&($$#. Will know for next time.

Brussels is basically a ripoff, both in terms of price and service... Service providers (the people in the counters of shops, ticket offices, taxis etc) do not hesitate to aggressively argue with you, and are "happy" to escalate towards a fist fight. Truly sad and pathetic, and paving way for "premium" services, meaning overprices "wannabe" VIP services, which usually implies basic politeness and respect.

Indeed, but the Brussels politicians don't seem to agree. Maybe they are taking a cut from the profits?
I was charged €40 for a trip that should normally only cost €25 max even in heavy traffic, but more like €20 in the conditiouns on that occasion. But with my computer and other valuables in the boot of the car, I was hardly in any position to argue.
Unlike in a civilized city such as London, it is virtually impossible to distinguish the official taxi drivers from the ripoff merchants.

Tried taking a cab from my hotel. Driver said 8 euros to Grand Place. Reception said 35 plus and that drivers lie. When i asked a different driver about the price to a closer location, he said 100 euro. When i said that was ridiculous, he asked how much i would like to pay. He then said he would call his boss to see if i could get a discount, and offered me 80 euros. Dont waste your time with these thieves.

brussels taxis are a rip off unless it is absolutely necessary dont take one; not only that they are rude and obnoxious generally. be better off in the tram or metro

I just came back from Brussels. I took a Taxi from the central station to the hotel nearby. The taxi driver charged us 15 euros. Late on, i walked from my hotel to the station within 10 minutes. It's a absolute rip off. I recommened NO taking taxi in Brussels.

I was over in Brussels last weekend at a trade fair in Expo. We got a taxi from the Airport to the show and it cost €32. We also got a taxi when returning from the show to the Airport. However, even though the taxi journey was quicker and it was during the day the taxi driver charged us €45. To me it was an absolute rip off and does nothing to encourage tourists to come to visit the city. When I questioned the drive about the high rate he got very excited and was less than pleasant. I got his registration no. for his car which was XNW369. The number on the inside of the car was 6617 and he also wrote the following references on the receipt - 722424627 XNV643. He was clearly giving us a load of numbers as I told him I was not happy and was considering reporting him. When I disputed the charge he then wrote on the ticket that he was waiting 15 minutes. This is totally untrue as the only reason that we were waiting was to dispute the price with him when we got out and this was for 2-e3 minutes at max. I do believe that something should be done about these unscruptulous drivers who are ripping off tourists and giving the city a bad name.
