Taxi warning for festive revellers

Christmas revellers in Preston were today warned to ensure the taxis they use are fully licensed.

Black hackney cabs around the city centre are licensed to pick up passengers in Preston without pre-booking arrangements being made. But private hire taxis have to be pre-booked, or must have made arrangements for a collection with the customer. Police are warning visitors to the city never to arrange to meet in a poorly lit or secluded area. City Centre Inspector Steve Evans said: "People must be aware that if they get a lift home in a private hire taxi that hasn't been pre-booked then they are putting themselves in real danger. They will not be insured whilst in that vehicle. Should an accident occur and they receive injuries there is no recompense for the passenger whatsoever. "My message to people enjoying an evening out in the city centre is make sure that the vehicle you are getting into outside the pub or club is really a taxi. If for any reason you are not sure then don't get in."
