Czech taxi drivers can apply for a licence in Austria

SOLVIT convinced the Austrian authorities that the European driving licence issued in the Czech Republic is equal to the Austrian driving licence.

A Czech taxi driver wanted to provide taxi services in Vienna and therefore, he applied for the "taxi licence" issued by the Austrian authorities. However, when he asked at the Chamber of Commerce in Vienna, he was told that an Austrian driving licence is required, and that his European driving licence will not be accepted. To get the Austrian driving licence, a person has to be resident in Austria for at least six months.

According to the EU rules, the European driving licences have to be recognised all over the EU. After consultations with SOLVIT, the responsible Austrian authorities changed their approach. An Austrian driving licence is no longer a legally compelling condition for issuing the Austrian taxi licence.
